Random SEO Stuff – Volume #1

I’m hoping this will become a series of posts that I plan to do over the next year on various topics.  I will admit; I’m not a very good blogger and I hate details.  To write 300 word posts with great detail on anything bores me to death.  What I would rather do is share with you tid-bits of information that will get the ball rolling for you, so that you can search the topic in more detail if it interests you.  You see, I have sticky notes with topic ideas, but by the time I get around to writing about them, they will be outdated.  This way you get the info, straight to the point and if you wish to follow it up, just go to our best friend/enemy (Google) and look it up.

Hope you enjoy!

Thin Affiliate Websites - This has been talked about for years, but it’s safe to say that it’s true;  Google hates thin affiliate sites and will devalue the pages (or de-index them) if they see a page full of affiliate links and no content.  Focus on content first, ads second and you will be fine.  As for number of words on a page;  It’s hard to say.  Depending on your topic, how much competition and what it would take to make your website useful.  At minimum, I would say 300 words, but this is a guideline only.  Remember, Google will de-value PAGES not entire websites, so if you have a few light pages, they may get devalued yet the rest of your site may do well.  For some pages that don’t need much content, it may be inevitable to leave them light on content.

Kontika Ads – I wanted to try something other than Adsense to see if I could get a better Click-Though Rate.  Kontika mini-malls seem to be a good choice.  Tested them out for a week or two and I noticed a few things.  #1.  Not a single click, with thousands of impressions #2. My rankings slipped during the time that they were on my sites.  Maybe it’s a coincidence, but needless to say, I’m not thrilled with them.  I’m not thrilled with Adsense either, but at least Google has some incentive to rank your website higher if they’re making money from it.

One Lung Affiliate Websites – Many in the post BANS/EPN Affiliate world who have jumped onto the One Lung Affiliate Website bandwagon.  If you don’t know about it, Google it.  If you’re looking to make a quick buck, this might be your answer.  It helps you build a really poor quality, crappy looking website  with random keywords tucked into a thin site to capture long-tail keyword searches.  To me it’s a lot like the Buckley’s slogan “Tastes awful but it works”.  One Lung’s slogan should be “Looks awful, but it works”.   I actually signed up to it for about 10 minutes before realizing what it was and decided to ask for a refund.  If you want to build a long-term income, focus on quality instead of building Spam websites.  Even if you fool Google for a while, they will catch on and One Lung sites do mostly qualify as web spam.  Build a website that you will be proud of, not some spammy looking website that may earn you a few dollars and that you would be embarrassed to share with your friends.  Of course, this is my opinion…

That concludes Volume #1 of Random SEO Stuff.  Stay tuned for more in the coming days, weeks and months.

InfoLinks – I Love Them!

I’ve been looking for revenue opportunities (other than Adsense) for my article directories as they just aren’t earning very much money.  In January so far, I’ve made something ridiculous (50 cents?) from Adsense on these article directories.  Of course they aren’t getting a lot of traffic yet, but between the 3 of them, they are seeing about 200 unique visitors each day.  They are getting found by searchers coming from Yahoo, Bing and Google and I expect them to increase.

I’ve been racking my brain as to how to make some money with these directories as they were started on a whim. I just wanted to see how the business worked.  With Adsense clicks being few and far between and paying pretty poorly, I wanted something else.

I started searching around and found InfoLinks and Kontera.  After doing some research decided to try InfoLinks first and put Kontera on the backburner.  If you aren’t familiar with either, essentially what InfoLinks (and Kontera) do is search through your website and add those double-underlined links to keywords in the text of your website.  People can hover over them to see an advertisement and click them to go to the advertisers website.  Similar to Adsense, but right in the text and it’s all automated.  You control how many go on a page and their click-though rates are better than Adsense in many cases.

Installation of InfoLinks is VERY easy, even if you barely know what you are doing.  It’s a simple script that you copy and paste and you’re ready to roll.  You can edit the look of your links to edit the color and the underline.  It couldn’t be any easier.

The good news for me so far is that their click-through rate is almost 5%, which for me is incredible compared to what I was seeing with Adsense.  I’m very happy with it so far!

If you haven’t checked them out, I would seriously consider it.

Job Niche Site Updates & Changes

This is the third update on my progress with the local job related website that I am working on.  You can read the other updates below:

Niche Website Introduction

Niche Website Update

The second link details what I have done so far to get this site to it’s current position.  Since writing that, I haven’t done much, other than write a blog post on the site, and write a blog post on the blogger blog that I have associated with the website.  I also removed some affiliate ads and replaced them with something more subtle.

The good news is that this local niche website is now safely on page 3 of Google, right at the top of the page.  I expect within a few weeks to see it make it to page #2 and then on to page #1.  My biggest concern is that I’m competing against a professional SEO company, which I have wrote about in the previous posts.  One of the websites that is one the first page, also has associated websites and blogs on page one and two as well, which to me speaks to the work of a pro.  My guess is that if I have taken notice of them, they have also taken notice of me.  Of course, I could be paranoid, but they must have taken note of a website that came out of nowhere and is looking to bump them down the rankings slightly.

Time will tell, but I am happy with the progress so far, even though I’m not seeing much traffic as of yet.
